What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a modern assisted reproductive technology that has enabled millions to achieve parenthood. The term “in vitro” means “in glass”, referencing the lab setting where fertilization takes place.

Unlike natural conception, IVF involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in a lab, and transferring healthy embryos into the uterus. This process helps overcome various fertility obstacles, making IVF one of the most effective treatments for individuals and couples facing challenges in conceiving.

Step by Step Process Of IVF

Understanding IVF stages can reduce anxiety. Here’s a quick guide from your first consultation to the pregnancy test.

1. Initial Consultation & Fertility Assessment

Your IVF journey begins with a comprehensive consultation where your fertility specialist reviews your medical history, conducts diagnostic tests (like hormone levels, ultrasound, and semen analysis), and discusses treatment options. This step is crucial for creating a personalized IVF plan tailored to your specific needs.

2. Ovarian Stimulation (10–14 days)

Fertility medications are used to stimulate the ovaries, encouraging the production of multiple eggs. During this phase, you’ll undergo regular blood tests and ultrasounds to monitor the response and adjust medication dosages as needed. The goal is to harvest several healthy eggs for fertilization.

3. Trigger Shot & Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs are ready, you’ll receive a trigger shot to help them mature. Egg retrieval (OPU) occurs 34–36 hours later under light anesthesia. The doctor uses a thin needle to collect the eggs from your ovaries. This is a quick outpatient procedure, and you can typically go home the same day.

4. Sperm Collection & Fertilization

On the day of egg retrieval, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a donor. The sperm is either mixed with the eggs (IVF) or injected directly into the eggs (ICSI). The fertilized eggs are then closely monitored to ensure healthy embryo development.

5. Embryo Development (3–5 days)

The fertilized embryos are cultured in a lab for 3–5 days. During this time, the embryologist monitors their growth, selecting the healthiest ones based on quality. This stage also allows for embryo freezing (cryopreservation) for future cycles, if necessary.

6. Embryo Transfer & Pregnancy Test

One or two of the healthiest embryos are transferred to your uterus using a thin catheter in a painless procedure. After the transfer, you’ll be given hormonal support to assist implantation. About 10–14 days later, a blood test is done to confirm pregnancy. If successful, an ultrasound is scheduled to detect the fetal heartbeat.

Who is IVF for?

IVF is a versatile solution for various fertility challenges, including:

Fallopian Tube Damage/Blockage: IVF bypasses the tubes and places the embryo directly in the uterus.
Male Infertility: IVF with ICSI helps overcome issues like low sperm count or poor motility.
Ovulation Disorders: IVF manages irregular cycles or PCOS with controlled stimulation.
Endometriosis: IVF bypasses complications by fertilizing eggs outside the body.
Unexplained Infertility: IVF increases the chances when no specific cause is found.
Same-Sex Couples & Single Parents: IVF enables conception through donor sperm, eggs, or surrogacy.

IVF also offers hope for same-sex couples and those considering using donor eggs or sperm to build their families.
